My heart races.

It wasn’t allowed, we knew that, but we did it anyway.

My sister’s face has turned bright red.

Together we go upstairs. We stay there until we think Mama’s bout of anger has passed.

Today I’m going to visit Bomma on my own. That in itself is nothing unusual, but the fact that I’m going in secret is. Today’s a good day for it, since Mama’s at work until five.

School’s out.

“Coming around to play?” Lienke asks as we head outside.

“Can’t,” I mutter. “I’m going to Bomma’s.”

“Pity,” says Lienke. “See you tomorrow then.”
